Photofacial is a generic term that refers to any skin treatment that uses light-based technology. There are two main types of this treatment, and they are Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Light-Emitting Diode (LED). When most people talk about photo facials, they are referring to IPL.

What is IPL?

IPL is a nonablative and noninvasive procedure that uses visible high-intensity light pulses to remove imperfections and improve the texture of the skin. It can treat wrinkles, freckles, rosacea, and facial veins. It has also been able to treat stretch marks, mild to moderate acne, and increase collagen production.

What is the process?

The technician starts by applying a gel to the area about to be treated and fastens the device to a setting based on the client’s skin color and type. They will then use the device on the skin to deliver precise pulses of light. It takes about 20 minutes to complete the treatment, which is why many people choose to get it done on their lunch break. Even though the light is safe, clients are still required to wear goggles to protect their eyes from the light during the procedure.

What happens?

The device targets cells with pigment, delivering light that converts into heat energy. For example, it can be set to target discoloration that causes age spots. Most systems can use a filter to refine the light energy output depending on the area. The treatment does not work on the top layer of skin and, instead, targets the lower layers. So, while you will notice some improvement after your treatment, it will still be about a week to see the full results.

Does it hurt?

Some people think it’s not a big deal while others find it quite uncomfortable. Painful wouldn’t be the right word to describe it, but it is not as uneventful as a standard facial since it is a proper medical treatment. It feels mostly warm with a little zap. Some areas are more sensitive to it than others, so it will not feel the same all over.

How many treatments should I get?

You will see improvement after one treatment, but you may need more depending on how severe your skin issues are. You may need between four and six treatments to reach your desired results.

Do I need to prepare?

Before going into your treatment, you should avoid working out 24 hours prior to it and avoid harsh products for about two weeks after. Avoid the sun before and after your treatment as your skin will be extra sensitive.
